Electrodynamics of the Coupled Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System
Electrodynamics of the Coupled Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System
Session ID#: 124670
Session Description:
We invite theoretical, experimental, and modeling contributions addressing the causes, morphology, dynamics, and consequences of presence of electric fields in the ionosphere on various spatial and temporal scales. Phenomena of interest include time-varying electric fields of magnetospheric origin (convection, auroral precipitation, penetration electric fields, subauroral polarization streams, substorm-related perturbations including supersubstorms), neutral wind dynamo effects, topside and plasmaspheric phenomena, and localized plasma instabilities at all latitudes. Potential contributions can address both the nature and sources of these electric fields, as well as consequences of them such as effects on electron density structuring, growth or suppression of equatorial spread-F and other instabilities. One of the goals of the session is to summarize current understanding and outstanding issues in these areas, particularly in the context of current missions such as GOLD, ICON, and COSMIC-2, and the status and capabilities of numerical modeling to address outstanding questions in this area.
