Advancements in the Occurrence, Fate, Transport, Transformation, and Remediation of Contaminants in the Environment
Advancements in the Occurrence, Fate, Transport, Transformation, and Remediation of Contaminants in the Environment
Session ID#: 156598
Session Description:
Contaminants have always been at the heart of intensive research, due to their potential threats to the wildlife, human health, and the environment. These include conventional contaminants such as chlorinated solvents, 1,4-dioxane, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), pesticides, heavy metals, nutrients (N and P), and radionuclides. In comparison, newly emerging contaminants include per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), micro- and nano-plastics, viruses, engineered nanomaterials and nanocomposites, pharmaceutics and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). This session aims to provide a synergistic platform for academic, industrial, governmental, consulting, and other-related communities to share and discuss recent advancements, challenges, opportunities, and frontiers in the occurrence, fate, transport, transformation, and remediation of various contaminants. This multidisciplinary session welcomes both laboratory- and field-scale studies, along with modeling work and data analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) and other tools in:
- Contaminant sampling technologies, instrumentation, quantification, and verification using targeted and non-targeted analyses
- Contaminant occurrence, distribution, and source zone evaluation in the subsurface environment (soil and groundwater)
- Contaminant fate, transport, and cotransport in various environmental compartments including vadose zone, critical zone, and saturated zone
- Contaminant transformation (e.g., PFAS precursors), bioaccumulation, impacts, toxicity, and risks to wildlife and humans
- Contaminant remedial technologies using in situ, ex situ, and combined treatment train techniques
