Atmospheric Chemistry over the Tibetan Plateau: Measurement, Processing and the Impacts on Climate and Air Quality

Session ID#: 156979

Session Description:
The Tibetan Plateau covers 2.5 million km2 area with average altitude above 4km. It is referred as the third pole of the world and is representative of an alpine background region of the Earth’s atmosphere. The topography influences the moisture circulation and convection transport of pollutants on a global scale and hence modifies atmospheric photochemistry. For instance, proposed strengthening of atmospheric oxidative capacity lead to an, as-yet, unidentified climate implication. Altitude dependent oxygen deficiency, combined with O3 pollution, also raise concerns on potential human health impacts for the 3 million residents of the region and over 30 million tourists annually.

For a better scientific understanding of the fundamental atmospheric chemistry and its impacts on climate change & human health, multiple international campaigns, @Tibet field campaigns, were conducted since 2019, to intensively discuss the following essential scientific questions and topics: Oxidative capacity of the atmosphere: first measurement constraint of OH and O3 budgets and evaluation of their climate impacts; Photochemistry and air-soil flux of OH precursors, i.e., reactive nitrogen and atmospheric organic carbon; Aerosol chemistry and physics: molecular mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol formation, new particle formation, optical properties and aerosol - cloud interaction;Exposure assessment of ambient air pollution to short-term and permanent residents of Tibetan Plateau;Health effects of environmental risk factors, e.g., ambient and indoor pollution and oxygen-deficient status, etc, to the short-term and permanent residents of Tibetan plateau.
