Pore-Scale Physics: Recent Advances in Experimental and Computational Methods
Session ID#: 157132
Session Description:
Porous materials have gained significant attention in recent years due to their growing role in a variety of applications and emerging technologies related to energy, climate, and the environment. These range from groundwater remediation, geothermal energy, geologic carbon sequestration to the manufacturing of fuel cells, batteries, and membranes. A goal common to all is the achievement of passive or active control of the underlying pore-scale processes that involve fluid flow, species transport, reactions, phase change, and mechanical deformation. The task requires a dramatically improved understanding of the governing physics through a combination of modeling and experimentation, that can then be translated into advanced algorithms and solvers used for prediction and design. In that spirit, we solicit contributions that explore new ways of computing, visualizing, validating, measuring, and ultimately untangling the intricate complexities of porous materials at the micron/nano scale. Algorithmic, experimental, and theoretical contributions are welcome. Examples include, but are not limited to, multiphase flow, passive/reactive transport, interfacial and wetting dynamics, poroelasticity, sub-continuum physics (e.g., rarefied flow in shales), biogeochemistry, complex fluids, granular flow, microfluidics, scalable solvers, AI-augmented computing, and scale translation.
