Forest structural diversity: metrics, methods, and links to ecosystem functions

Session ID#: 157597

Session Description:
Changes in forest structural diversity may affect many ecological functions and services. Structural diversity encompasses attributes such as stand structure, composition, and canopy complexity. Measures of structural diversity can include variation in the distribution of tree heights and sizes, leaf density and clumping, canopy cover and arrangement, and aggregate measures of heterogeneity and complexity. These measures can be derived from a variety of methods including traditional field approaches (forest inventories and surveys), proximal remote sensing (unoccupied aerial vehicles, terrestrial laser scanning), and air- and spaceborne platforms (e.g., aerial lidar, GEDI, IceSAT2).

In this session we seek to (1) discuss insights offered by new technologies and the different views and measures of structural diversity they supply; (2) highlight new and emerging research connecting structural diversity to a diverse array of ecological processes (e.g., productivity, microclimate regulation, land/atmosphere exchange, biogeochemical cycling, and disturbance); (3) explore the relative importance of structural diversity and biodiversity in determining ecosystem functions or services; and (4) examine how structural diversity changes in response to drivers of global change and how management actions shape structural diversity. We invite submissions about any aspect of structural diversity at any spatial scale, and which use remote sensing, modeling, field studies, or other relevant approaches.
