Glacier-Lake Interactions in a Changing Climate: an Interdisciplinary Perspective on Rates, Processes, and Impacts
Session ID#: 157628
Session Description:
The global retreat of glaciers and ice sheets has created a multitude of new lakes or modified existing ones, altering downstream biophysical systems as well as the mass balance and behavior of the upstream glacier. These modified landscapes modulate existing hydrologic and geomorphic dynamics, while simultaneously creating new habitat and hazards. This session welcomes submissions that: characterize changes to ice-marginal lakes (i.e., lakes in direct contact with glaciers); explore physical processes driving these changes; and/or investigate impacts on glacier behavior, water resources, outburst flood hazard, fluvial dynamics, and ecosystem function. An interdisciplinary approach is essential for understanding the evolution of ice-marginal lakes because they are found at the interface of multiple systems and their change has complex and wide-ranging impacts. This session seeks to bring together diverse perspectives with ice-marginal lakes as the nexus, encouraging observational and model-based studies with contexts including natural hazards, glaciology, hydrology, surface processes, and ecology.
