The Effect Extreme Heat, Heat Waves and Urban Heat Islands on Public Health: Vulnerability, Impacts, Adaption, and Mitigation

Session ID#: 157687

Session Description:
Anthropogenic activities have impacts on public health through rising temperatures, especially in urban areas. These activities include production of pollution, modification of chemical and physical atmospheric features, and transformation of land cover and land use associated with urbanization and socio-economic development. These impacts are enhanced through various pathways and natural hazards, including heat waves and the formation of urban heat islands. Earth observation data can be a powerful tool for researchers and planners to monitor climate factors and assess various health outcomes to inform mitigation and prevention strategies. This session seeks for advancements in application, technology, and modelling with earth observation data to better understand its impacts on public health related to siding temperatures, as well as prediction of health outcomes for preparedness in both the short and long term.
