Bringing Health to the Room Where it Happens: Incorporating Health and Equity into Climate Policies and Planning.

Session ID#: 158870

Session Description:
The negative health implications of climate inaction and their inequitable distribution are apparent. Today, climate change negatively impacts global health from increasing excessive heat exposure to intensifying western US wildfires. Unchecked greenhouse gas emissions will continue to exacerbate these, and other, environmental threats to public health. The paths we take to mitigate climate change have the potential to address environmental injustices, protect the health of future generations, and provide health co-benefits today through improved air quality, increased greenspace access, active transportation, and other avenues. The potential health and equity benefits of climate mitigation are often left unincorporated in climate policies and planning. Leaving health and equity considerations out of climate action planning underestimates benefits of climate action for present and future generations. This session invites works quantifying the environmental, equity, and health impacts of climate mitigation and methods for incorporating these impacts into climate action planning.
