Global Hotspots related to Environmental Change and Health Impacts

Session ID#: 158994

Session Description:
Assessing the linkages between hotspots of environmental change and human health is critical in guiding medical practitioners to understand populations and people at risk from observed and projected environmental change, and eventually to anticipate and prevent any additional burden of disease. In the last four decades, population growth and higher energy demand have increased anthropogenic activities that have driven global warming.  Continuous increases in greenhouse gas concentrations coupled with widespread land use and land cover change have amplified land-climate interactions and led to notable changes in environmental conditions globally.  However, the amplitude of environmental change is not uniform across the world with some regions experiencing these changes most acutely.  Hotspots of environmental change are frequently associated with adverse impacts on human health and wellbeing, including exposure to high levels of air pollution, extreme heat/cold events, shifts in precipitation patterns and subsequent lack of access to clean water, changes in the hydrological cycle affecting the spread of waterborne diseases, and changes in the habitats for disease-transmitting vectors and zoonotic reservoir hosts that affect infectious disease transmission. The proposed session invites papers related to all aspects of environmental change, atmospheric science, and hydrology that are relevant to human health and increasing disease burdens. Applications of satellite and ground observations in mapping, monitoring, and early warning of ecological imbalance and outbreaks of diseases affecting human health are particularly encouraged.
