Atmosphere, Ocean, and Land Processes in the Maritime Continent and Indo-Pacific

Session ID#: 159095

Session Description:
The Maritime Continent and Indo-Pacific tropical warm pool regions are a nexus of congestus and deep convection generated and maintained on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Current global coupled prediction models, and many satellite algorithms, suffer from persistent, systematic errors and limited skill in the region. Linked land-ocean-atmosphere processes control the lifecycle, upscale growth, and multiscale organization of convection, including by cloud-aerosol and cloud-radiative interactions, coupled boundary layer evolution, air-sea fluxes, and extratropical influences. These were the foci of recent field campaigns (e.g., CAMP2Ex, CHECSM, DIMOP, MISO-BOB, PISTON, SCSTIMX, YMC). This session solicits contributions on physical processes related to convection, air-sea interaction, atmospheric composition, radiation, and ocean processes over the Indo-Pacific warm pool and Maritime Continent. Contributions could include observations, numerical modeling, data assimilation, reanalysis products, predictability, and theory. Studies on sub-seasonal-to-seasonal, synoptic, mesoscale, and diurnal variations are encouraged, including but not limited to the MJO/BSISO, monsoons, and extreme weather.
