Induced seismicity and caprock failure in carbon sequestration and geo-energy applications
Session ID#: 159100
Session Description:
Pore pressure perturbations in geo-energy projects (e.g., carbon and subsurface energy storage, enhanced geothermal systems, hydrocarbon development) can trigger seismicity and/or caprock failure. Developing tools to identify, understand, and mitigate these hazards is increasingly urgent as carbon storage and subsurface energy development emerge as critical technologies for mitigating climate change. For this session, we invite studies focusing on the impact of induced or natural pore pressure changes on subsurface energy and carbon storage projects. Relevant topics and methods include but are not limited to: Monitoring and characterizing pressure, temperature, seismicity, and aseismic strain; geologic and geophysical reservoir characterization; measuring stresses; surface deformation monitoring and modeling; coupled hydro-geotechnical numerical modeling; risk assessments; fault geology and rupture dynamics; friction lab tests and simulations; carbon, geothermal, or hydrocarbon reservoir chemistry; and related case studies.
We welcome submissions from geophysics, geomechanics, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, and related disciplines.
