Reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes in porous media

Session ID#: 159175

Session Description:
This session is focused on experimental, theoretical, and numerical work which study coupled subsurface phenomena with particular emphasis on reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes. Reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes in porous media govern critical subsurface applications such as mineral carbon storage, geologic nuclear waste disposal and hydrogen storage. Recent progress in modeling and experimental tools to study transport, reactions, and mechanical processes have boosted geoscience research and have opened new opportunities to understand the behavior of porous geomaterials in subsurface. Cutting-edge experimental techniques enable chemical and structural analysis with unprecedented resolution, including state-of-the-art in situ measurements. At the same time, advances in simulation and data assimilation methods allow us to characterize coupled chemical kinetics at mineral interfaces, dynamics of phase transformations in complex porous, granular, and fractured media, and deformation and contact dynamics of such systems.

Despite these advances, it remains uncertain whether the evolution of such complex and heterogeneous systems can be accurately predicted. There are lingering knowledge gaps surrounding interconnections among the critical factors that control subsurface reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes.

 We encourage contributions that:

  • Demonstrate how microscopic events affect larger scale phenomena (e.g., nucleation driven precipitation, reaction induced fracturing, mineral dissolution and wormholing)
  • Combine high-resolution imaging or microscopy techniques with simulations of chemical or structural alterations
  • Employ recent advances in machine learning and its application to reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes
