Coherent Structures and Plasma Waves in Solar Wind Turbulence
Coherent Structures and Plasma Waves in Solar Wind Turbulence
Session ID#: 159444
Session Description:
Coherent nonlinear structures and plasma waves in solar wind turbulence have drawn considerable interest in recent years. Small-scale nonlinear structures such as magnetic islands/flux ropes, vortices, current sheets, etc, are observed throughout the heliosphere and they constitute an important component of the solar wind turbulence. In addition to nonlinear structures, waves with clear frequency and polarization signatures are sometimes observed by solar wind in-situ measurements, at both MHD and kinetic scales. Kinetic-scale waves are especially important for solar wind heating via wave-particle interactions and stochastic heating. Some of the outstanding questions related to nonlinear structures and plasma waves include their origin, dynamic evolution and interaction, and their roles in solar wind turbulence and energization of nonthermal particles. In this session, we welcome observational, theoretical, and numerical contributions to the knowledge of nonlinear structures and waves in the solar wind, as well as their relationship with switchbacks, turbulence, and energetic particles. Studies related to Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter missions are especially welcomed.
