VLF and EMIC Waves in the Inner Magnetosphere: Investigating Wave Generation, Propagation and Wave-Particle Interaction Through Observations, Modeling, Simulation and Theory

Session ID#: 159540

Session Description:
Very low frequency (VLF) waves such as whistler mode chorus, hiss and communications transmitters, as well as Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron waves, and their interaction with magnetospheric particle populations, are among the most widely studied and debated research topics in inner magnetospheric physics.  These waves are known to contribute significantly to the formation and depletion of the Earth’s and other planets’ radiation belts through acceleration, transport and loss of energetic particles, as well as being an important process coupling the magnetosphere with the ionosphere through particle precipitation. Determination of the source regions and generation mechanisms of the waves, and the propagation of these waves to other areas of the magnetosphere, is crucial to understanding the relative importance of these interactions.  Recently, the unprecedented coverage of satellites in both the wave source regions (Van Allen Probes, Arase, THEMIS, MMS, Cluster etc.) and the precipitation regions (POES/MetOp, FIREBIRD, AC-6, ELFIN, BARREL, etc.) allows for direct observation of these interactions and the propagation of the waves. Simultaneously, the simulation and modeling communities are using this empirical data to improve models and theory of these wave-particle interactions, such as the inclusion of nonlinear interactions and the role of cold (and hot) plasma in the wave growth and propagation.  We welcome submissions that use multi-point observations, simulations, theory, neural network applications or any combination of these to help further our understanding of these important magnetospheric processes.
