Experimental and Theoretical Developments on Large-Volume Samples Under Extreme Conditions and Their Implications for Planetary Scale Processes

Session ID#: 159802

Session Description:
The scale of key processes in the deep interiors of planets can vary from angstroms to kilometers.  Because of the experimental and computational challenges however, most techniques encompassing the center of planets are limited to the nanometer to micrometer scale. Some key processes, such as deformation and partitioning, therefore require extrapolation of theory and data from the laboratory scale to the planetary scale. In this session, we invite contributions from experimental and theoretical communities, such as large-volume presses and first-principles calculations for recent scientific and technical developments on this key problem.  This effort is particularly timely because of recent technical developments around the world and construction of new national facilities, such as FORCE (Facility for Open Research in a Compressed Environment). We also seek contributions from other communities, such as diamond-anvil cell and dynamic compression, which can take advantage of the large-volume techniques for understanding planetary processes.
