Organic Compounds as Environmental Proxies: Development, Calibrations and Applications
Session ID#: 159867
Session Description:
Organic compounds are well-suited independent proxies for reconstructing a variety of environmental processes in the modern and (geological) past. This includes the distribution and stable isotopic composition of n-alkanes, fatty acids, alkenones, sterols, hopanoids, HBIs, HGs, GDGTs, and others. Given a complex relationship between these organic compounds and environmental conditions, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms that influence their molecular composition and distributions in depositional environments including source organisms, transport, post-deposition processes, and diagenesis. Diverse statistical methods and calibration datasets provide the benchmark for reliable reconstructions of past environmental parameters.
We seek studies that develop and apply these methods in the modern and in the geological past to reconstruct environmental parameters such as temperature, precipitation, carbon cycles, anthropogenic change, and vegetation. These can be studies on the biosynthesis and phylogeny of source organisms, transport and diagenesis, calibrations to environmental parameters, proxy interpretation and applications to reconstruct past environmental conditions.
