EP015
Landscape Evolution Beneath and Beyond the Ice

Session ID#: 159920

Session Description:
In the recent geological past, glaciers covered a substantial fraction of the global land surface. These ice masses carved bedrock and exported sediment into moraines, ice-marginal lakes, and rivers. Through erosion and deposition, they converted once-through-flowing drainages into sets of closed depressions. Glacial erosion produced sediment, which when carried by meltwater discharge from the ice margins, modified river valleys and generated fluvial terraces that are still seen today. The finer fractions of these sediments, combined with oft cold, dry, and windy conditions, were lofted by winds and eventually deposited into dunes and fields of loess. Evidence of cryoturbation surrounds the sites of past ice sheets, including frost-wedge polygons, sand and ice wedges, and evidence of solifluction and frost-induced erosion.

In this session, we invite presentations on how landscapes once (or currently) beneath and/or near glaciers have been shaped by the presence of the ice and its environment. For the first AGU Fall Meeting in Chicago,  once covered by an outlet glacier of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, we seek to celebrate and delve into the formation mechanisms of such glacial landscapes and the histories recorded in the landforms of today.
