Climate Action in an Era of Global Energy Security Concerns
Climate Action in an Era of Global Energy Security Concerns
Session ID#: 160094
Session Description:
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has upended global energy geopolitics with far reaching impacts beyond Europe. The European Union’s (EU) plan to phase out Russian imports of oil and natural gas puts a significant strain on global commodity prices. Some countries including the United States have responded by relaxing regulations or reducing taxes on fossil fuels to shield consumers from the price shock. There are also calls for expanding fossil fuel infrastructure such as liquefied natural gas terminals to meet demand. In parallel, many countries have raised their ambition on climate action as part of the recently concluded COP26, with India notably announcing a net-zero emissions target. Whether concerns of energy security and supply stability overwhelm long-term needs of emissions reduction and energy transition is a key challenge facing the world. This session will focus on the complex interaction between energy security and climate policy, and how countries around the world can achieve their climate goals while managing geopolitical risks. Panelists will explore how climate actions such as rapid electrification, energy efficiency, and domestic green manufacturing could simultaneously improve global energy security. We will engage experts from the industry, government, and academia from around the world to understand the various pathways available to achieve a low-carbon and secure energy system.
