Subduction Initiation at the Turning Point of the Wilson Cycle

Session ID#: 160219

Session Description:
At the onset of convergent tectonics in the Wilson Cycle, subduction initiation represents a fundamental geological process governing the Earth´s dynamics. Geodynamic modelling, geophysical techniques, field observations, and geochemical studies have addressed the role of inherited lithospheric discontinuities and physical properties and the record and timescales of magmatism during subduction inception. The subsequent orogenic overprint and the scarcity of fossil examples challenge the characterization of the transient initiation process and nascent subduction zones.

This session aims to attract works that approach the spectrum of contraction processes during the first phases of the convergent cycle, from compressional reactivation of oceanic domains, rifted margins and rift systems, to subduction initiation. We invite contributions that address the structure of the deforming region, its spatio-temporal geodynamic evolution, and the role of pre-existing lithospheric structures and physical properties, using geophysical data, numerical and analogue modelling, field observations, geochemical, petrological and thermochronological approaches, and plate reconstructions.
