Drained Lake Basins in Permafrost Regions

Session ID#: 160249

Session Description:
Lakes in arctic and subarctic permafrost regions are susceptible to (catastrophic) drainage events. Drained lake basins (DLBs) are often the most common landforms in lowland permafrost regions. The presence of DLBs and their relative distribution and abundance in the landscape influence permafrost-region carbon cycling, GHG and nutrient fluxes, habitat provision, hydrology, geomorphology, and human land use practices.

This session is intended as a forum for current research on DLBs in permafrost dominated landscapes. We seek contributions that reflect diverse scientific fields, approaches, geographic locations and scales (e.g., local observations to large scale studies). We particularly encourage contributions that that (a) provide data on DLB geology, cryostratigraphy, and geomorphology; (b) improve process understanding; (c) investigate model validation, model uncertainty, and scaling issues; (d) couple models of diverse processes or scales, and (e) foster our understanding of DLBs, associated permafrost conditions and surrounding terrain.
