Integrating Earth Observations and Socioeconomic Data for a Sustainable Human Planet: Challenges, Opportunities and Priorities
Session ID#: 160620
Session Description:
Recent advancements in linking remotely-sensed Earth observation data with both traditional and new sources of socioeconomic and demographic data portend a new era in understanding human-environmental systems across our planet. Such integrated data – including gridded population products, poverty maps, and high-resolution building footprints – are increasingly used by both scholars and practitioners for hazard risk mapping, food insecurity assessment, climate impact projections, refugee and conflict monitoring, humanitarian anticipatory actions and relief, and tracking the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, among other efforts. Yet a disconnect remains across the development, dissemination, and use of such data – especially related to how such data contribute to policy actions beyond initial investments of data portals, tools, and interfaces. This session focuses on closing this gap. It highlights collaborative efforts to improve communication of underlying uncertainty with data selection, integration, and modeling of combined remotely-sensed data and socioeconomic and demographic data across data user and producer communities.
