Spatial and temporal interrogation of biogeochemical interactions in the heterogeneous soil or soil-like systems
Session ID#: 160802
Session Description:
In the complex and heterogeneous soil environment, microbial community dynamics vary by orders of magnitude within short spatial distances, as microorganisms interact with surrounding soil minerals and both living and decaying plant roots. Consequently, tightly coupled biotic/abiotic interactions change frequently in response to environmental fluctuations and resource availability. The temporal and spatial heterogeneity of soil systems presents a significant challenge for understanding plant and microbial responses and adaptations to environmental stress, including those imposed by climate change. Multiple approaches, including mesocosms, split-pot designs, and synthetic soil models can mimic yet distinguish natural physical and chemical soil properties, while enabling multimodal characterization of microbe-plant root interactions. In addition, many new innovative methods have recently been developed that directly probe in situ dynamics of native soil systems without perturbation and allow spatiotemporal measurements of microbe-plant root dynamics.
In this session, we solicit contributions that investigate microbe-plant-mineral dynamics employing novel approaches to distinguish specific soil habitats: e.g., microcosms, synthetic and transparent soil-like models (EcoFABs, soil chips, micromodels), or studies that deploy mineral mesh bags in natural soils. We also welcome research using advanced 3D and novel multimodal chemical imaging techniques of rhizosphere processes, including soil-root structure/architecture, water dynamics, and microbe-microbe or microbe- root associations.
