Inclusion as Resilience: Gender and Intersectionality in Climate Service Design

Session ID#: 160974

Session Description:
Women are disproportionately affected by climate change and often exposed to climate risks to a much greater degree than men. At the same time, climate data is usually collected with a blind eye toward sex, gender, and other diversities, and subsequent policy initiatives and climate-related services fail to improve the conditions for the most vulnerable constituencies. Moreover, the lack of recognition of diverse and intersectional identities of women in particular endangers overall climate resilience and can further exacerbate existing inequalities.

This session aims to showcase climate research that is gender-sensitive and intersectionality-aware in the design, delivery and impact assessment of climate services. We welcome papers that use remote sensing and or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to address development issues particular to women and marginalized populations. These papers, at the forefront of climate services development, will showcase replicable methods for gender and social inclusion in research and applications.
