The Hydrologic and Hydrogeologic Role of the Cryosphere in Watershed Function

Session ID#: 161102

Session Description:
Glaciers, seasonal snow, and permafrost have acted as hydrological buffers in watersheds by sustaining summer baseflow, maintaining colder stream temperatures, and moderating biogeochemical signatures. However, as the climate continues to warm causing rain and snow partitioning shifts, glacier mass loss, and thawing permafrost, it is unclear whether cryosphere-mediated hydrologic functions are shifting in the context of surface water and groundwater systems. This session aims to bring together a wide range of studies across latitudes and climatic regimes to examine the hydrologic role of the cryosphere in a watershed context, and how it may be changing with the evolving climate. We invite submissions that take both hydrologic and cryospheric approaches to: 1) examine how glaciers, seasonal snow, and permafrost can buffer flow and associated biogeochemical signatures across wet and dry years with consequences for sediment production or the ecosystem, 2) identify the role of glaciers, snow melt, and permafrost in groundwater recharge dynamics 3) determine how changing glacier size, precipitation regime, and permafrost extent affects streamflow, and 4) find new insights on cryospheric stability and hydrologic function that will benefit future predictions.
