Subsurface Hydrogen Storage: Opportunities and Challenges for Enabling a Low Carbon Future
Session ID#: 161241
Session Description:
Hydrogen as an energy carrier has promise to enable the transition from our current dependence on fossil fuels towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Hydrogen is attractive because it can be generated using existing and emergent technologies. While industrial development is needed, leveraging existing infrastructure would accelerate the transition. However, the risks associated with hydrogen in our energy system are inadequately understood. Questions remain about underground hydrogen storage (UHS) feasibility, which is a necessary element of a hydrogen economy. Pressing challenges are assessing the technical practicability of storing vast amounts of hydrogen in existing or geo-engineered subsurface reservoirs, determining if natural accumulations exist, developing technologies for subsurface hydrogen monitoring, and informing policies and regulations to enable transition towards hydrogen as an energy carrier. This session seeks to include broad perspectives on UHS to enable discourse and advance our understanding for how hydrogen may be used to enable a low carbon future.
