Nonlinear Wave-Particle Interaction in the Earth’s Magnetosphere
Nonlinear Wave-Particle Interaction in the Earth’s Magnetosphere
Session ID#: 161326
Session Description:
Resonant wave-particle interaction is crucial for the wave generation and particle dynamics in collisionless space plasma. The nonlinear aspects of this interaction are most intriguing but yet less understood. Test particle simulations and theoretical models have predicted that these nonlinear effects are important for intense wave generation and can lead to very effective acceleration and scattering of energetic particles in Earth’s radiation belts, bow shock, and plasma jets. However, observations of energetic particle dynamics that can be attributed to the nonlinear wave-particle interaction are rare. This session focuses on: (1) data-driven approaches to include nonlinear resonant effects into models of energetic particle dynamics; (2) observational and theoretical investigations on contribution of such nonlinear effects to wave generation, rapid scattering and acceleration of energetic particles. This session aims to bring together both theoretical works and analysis of modern spacecraft observations (ERG, MMS, THEMIS, DSX, and CubeSats) to quantify contributions of nonlinear resonances to radiation belt dynamics and other regions of the magnetosphere.
