Applications of high-carbon materials in a de-carbonizing world

Session ID#: 161456

Session Description:
De-carbonization of our society is the next big challenge for environmental sustainability. While this is a massive undertaking that will require fundamental changes in all sectors of life, we can jump start the process by utilizing available resources. Carbonaceous materials such as biochar and coal-char are prime examples of such products that are cost efficient, widely available and offer significant environmental advantages. These are typically produced from the pyrolysis of residual biomasses, storing carbon that would otherwise be emitted directly or indirectly, while utilized for agricultural purposes and increasingly on environmental ones.

The objective of this session is to bring attention to the state of the art on the use of such carbonaceous materials, highlighting novel applications and advances in established ones. Papers on new research, such as treatment of emerging contaminants, and non-invasive characterization and performance monitoring methods such as, but not limited to, geophysical tools, are highly encouraged.
