Remote sensing of tropical forest and savanna responses to land use and climate change

Session ID#: 161476

Session Description:
Tropical forests and savannas are experiencing increasingly strong influences from  land-use change and climate change. Deforestation and degradation, combined with extreme events — such as hot droughts, wind storms, fires and hurricanes — affect both short-term and long-term changes in tropical forest and savanna biomes. Short-term impacts include changes in photosynthetic activity, evapotranspiration, and leaf phenology. Long-term changes include increased mortality, biodiversity loss, canopy clearing, and post-disturbance recovery. Remote sensing allows efficient quantification of the highly heterogeneous impacts of land use and climate change on tropical forests and savannas over large areas.  This session welcomes studies investigating changes in tropical forest and savanna ecosystems using a variety of remote sensing data including (but not limited to) lidar, radar, multispectral and imaging spectroscopy, from terrestrial, airborne, and spaceborne sensors. This session accepts research on a broad range of tropical forest and savanna ecosystems, including rainforests, dry forests, savannas, and mangroves.  Studies that combine remote sensing with models and field measurements are also welcome.
