Beyond Accommodation: Best Practices for Universal Design in Lab-, Field-, and Computational-Based STEMM Research and Education
Session ID#: 161565
Session Description:
Disability is an essential component of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in STEMM. This session will explore opportunities to incorporate universal design into STEMM education and research activities. Intentional design for inclusive spaces – including cultural shifts in STEMM education and research – has the potential to dramatically shift how we conduct science, who participates in science across all career stages, and what our collective scientific enterprise discovers. This session will bring together speakers who can bring to light the leading practices for improving accessibility for disabled scientists that conduct and participate in lab-, field-, and computational-based research. We welcome talks that highlight strategies for increasing accessibility in the physical, social, and life sciences, including: current barriers to full participation, moving beyond accommodations to universal design, the role of mentoring and other support networks, and the institutional policies and cultural change needed to ensure long-term change.
