Oceanic and Continental Extensional Tectonics

Session ID#: 161624

Session Description:
Our understanding of extensional tectonics from continental breakup to formation of oceanic crust and oceanic basins has improved substantially within the last three decades based on geological, geophysical, geochemical studies, and analog and computer modeling. Although it is widely accepted that continental fragmentation occurred throughout geological times, there are still many fundamental questions related to the transition from continental extensional tectonics in continental crust to an oceanic basin and oceanic crust formation, especially along the passive margins.

Large-scale extensional tectonics in the Basins and Ranges of Western North America and the Aegean Region of Eastern Europe and Western Asia occurred after collisional tectonics. These regions experienced a transition in the Cenozoic from contraction to large-scale extension and metamorphic core complex formation. This type of tectonic and petrologic succession may be “normal” for collisional mountain belts due to gravitational collapse of over thickened crust, or extension may be driven by other forcing factors, such as slab roll-back or continental escape.

This symposium will bring together researchers working on fundamental research questions on oceanic and continental extensional processes and transition from continental to oceanic crust. We plan to identify the most exciting new opportunities to answer the fundamental questions in extensional tectonics.
