Biogeochemical Cycling Mediated by Nanoscale Colloids and Particulate Matter: Developments in Measurements, Modeling, and Experiments

Session ID#: 161682

Session Description:
Nano-sized colloids and small particulates (natural and incidental) play a significant, but poorly understood role in biogeochemical cycles in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Owing to their broad size ranges (nanometer to micron scale), high surface areas, and enhanced surface reactivities, nano-colloids and small particulates are involved in a multitude of processes. Because they are typically associated with organic matter, micronutrients, and contaminants, these particle systems may also serve as critical transport vectors throughout terrestrial and aquatic environments. Identifying the mechanisms controlling their origins, transformations, migration, and fate in heterogeneous and dynamic environments can be accomplished by merging information gathered from molecular-scale characterizations, lab-scale controlled experiments, field-scale hydrological studies, and modelling simulations. This session is a multidisciplinary discussion on nano-colloids and small particulates in near-surface environments from the nanometer to ecosystem scale, and invites studies on topics related to: colloids/particulate matter and associated organic-, nutrient-, and metal cycling; emerging contaminants (e.g., microplastics); the roles of colloidal systems in ecosystem services and Earth Systems; reaction pathways; transport and migration; instrument and measurement techniques; nano-informatics/data treatment; and modelling.
