Actionable Earth System Science: The Challenge of Global Climate Modeling

Session ID#: 161947

Session Description:
Increasingly there are calls to enhance the usability of climate science, often framed in terms of co-producing actionable science with stakeholder (user) communities. But, within the context of global climate modeling, co-production with stakeholders is often difficult to achieve. Models are the result of research and labor distributed across large collections of practitioners and disciplines, often leading to a considerable gap between the producer and user communities. Compounding the difficulties of communicating across the producer and user communities are the challenges presented by differences of perspective—the information needs of the users differ considerably from the research priorities of the producers, especially in terms of spatiotemporal scales and representational values. Actionable knowledge is often localized and seasonal to decadal, while global climate models have traditionally provided information about globally oriented processes and conditions on longer than decadal time scales. This session will provide a forum for practitioners across the Earth system sciences to share insights into how to address these two challenges in practice. We invite presentations on case studies of applications from Earth system modeling to actionable information, discussions of approaches to constructing useful and usable information from climate model output, and approaches for co-creation of models—mainly configurations and experiments—and applied knowledge in an Earth system context.
