Integrative Approaches to Modeling and Monitoring of Bedrock Aquifers: Risk, Depletion, and Moving towards Sustainability

Session ID#: 162043

Session Description:
As shallow unconsolidated aquifers become depleted or contaminated worldwide, use of deep bedrock aquifers will likely increase to meet growing water demands. However, use of deep aquifers can be problematic due to expensive drilling costs and well maintenance, water quality and salinity issues, and limited recharge. Modeling and monitoring of deep aquifers may be challenging due to cost of installing monitoring wells, uncertainty associated with multi-aquifer wells, extreme drawdown under pumping conditions, or a lack of geologic or water use data. We invite contributions that highlight integrative approaches and advances in local to regional scale modeling, monitoring, and geophysical investigations of deep aquifers and bedrock wells. We aim to address questions such as: 1) How can deep aquifers be used sustainably? 2) What are the risks to wells and water users as deep aquifers undergo depletion? 3) Where is deep aquifer depletion occurring globally?
