GC020
Climate change impact on water pollution and air pollution

Session ID#: 162440

Session Description:
Extreme weather has happened more often in recent years. In the summer of 2021, wild fires were prevalent in the west coast as well as hurricanes along the east coast. The Bootleg and Dixie wild fires brought particulate matter 2.5 microns to New York City via the jet stream, and it turned the color of the sun and moon to a bright orange. Hurricane Elsa, Henry and Ida hit NYC and surrounding area, which caused sewage outflows, elevated nutrient and bacteria levels.  The NYC trilithon had to cancel the swim portion and substitute it with a one-mile run instead due to high bacteria level in the Hudson River. Hurricane Ida hit NYC on September 1, 2021. New Yorkers were blindsided by the storm, as no accurate weather forecast and no evacuation occurred in advance. There were 43 people that died in NY, NJ, PA, and CT.  Any topic related to water pollution and air pollution caused by climate change are welcome to this session.
