Going beyond mapping: From Earth Observation datasets to information system for planning of sustainable landscapes
Session ID#: 162442
Session Description:
The session invites contributions demonstrating innovative approaches for integrating Earth Observation (EO) information into knowledge-based systems for supporting informed planning of future landscapes. These approaches should be scalable in space and time, openly accessible, and easily adaptable by stakeholders (e.g., land managers and policy makers), and should demonstrate:
1) Capabilities of EO-datasets to inform national/global policy frameworks.
2) Integration of technological advances in EO-science with knowledge from wider environmental and socio-economic disciplines.
3) Synergies between EO-driven environmental descriptions and spatial models to explore pathways for restoring lost/degraded landscapes.
The session will encourage discussion around challenges in imagining and visualising future landscapes under various scenarios (of climate, economy). Consideration will be given to perspectives on user requirements, commitments, taxonomies, spatiotemporal scales, and related inconsistencies in light of EO-data availability and processing/analysis capabilities. We will also debate the EO-community’s role in decision making for landscapes in this UN decade for ecosystems restoration.
