Convergent Margin Orogenesis Across Space, Time, and Temperature

Session ID#: 163081

Session Description:
Compressional orogens can accommodate large amounts of lithospheric shortening and thickening, burial of rocks to mid- to lower crustal levels, and exhumation of deep, highly-metamorphosed rocks to the surface. Deciphering geometry, timing, kinematics, erosion, and sedimentation of compressional orogens are key to elucidating the physical laws that govern crustal dynamics and exhumation across space and time. Geological and geophysical data coupled with analog and numerical modeling have been fueling debates on the relationships among deformation, erosion, and basin accumulation; variations in geometry and kinematic sequence; the influence of inherited structures/stratigraphy; interactions between geochemical, geothermal, and geophysical processes; the relation between short- and long-term dynamics; and the complex connections among Earth-surface, mantle, and climate processes. This session aims to provide a platform for recent studies that integrate field observation, laboratory measurements (thermochronology, geochronology, geochemistry), analog and numerical modeling, remote sensing, seismology, and other approaches, to investigate the evolution of compressional orogens at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
