English Abstract:
The magnetopause (MP) marks the outermost boundary of the Earth's magnetospheric magnetic field. At rest, the magnetopause lies along the locus of points where magnetosheath and magnetospheric pressures balance. Since magnetosheath pressures are determined by solar wind conditions and magnetospheric pressures by physical processes occurring within the magnetosphere, the location of the magnetopause is a sensitive indicator of nature of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction and a good measure of how successfully numerical simulations capture this interaction
We employed a particle-in-cell (PIC) electromagnetic (EM) code with three different electron to ion mass ratios (r =1/16,1/32 adn 1/64) to simulate the effect of the latter parameter on the $ MP $ position and other plasma parameters along the Sun-Earth line. When other input parameters are held constant, decreases in mass ratio result in drastic compressions in the MP position. The best-fit mass ratio to retain the classical magnetospheric macrostructure in this version of the code is r = 1/16
