Session Description:
The Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) program (http:// soccom.princeton.edu) is a National Science Foundation-funded project (with major additional contributions from NOAA and NASA) that has a primary focus of deploying a large array (~200) of Biogeochemical-Argo profiling floats in the Southern Ocean. These floats carry oxygen, nitrate, pH, and biooptical sensors (as well as CTD), with all data available in real-time and assimilated into the Biogeochemical-Southern Ocean State Estimate in order to provide closed budgets for BGC processes. SOCCOM is entering its 6th year of funding, and continuation for an additional 4 years has been approved, which supports deployment of 30 floats each year. In addition to SOCCOM, US BGC-Argo efforts in the equatorial Pacific, California Current, and North Atlantic have been funded. A Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure proposal to extend the US program globally is presently in review.
In this Town Hall, we will review past efforts and future plans, with a primary focus on the funded SOCCOM program.The success of the SOCCOM BGC-Argo observing system development rests on strong science goals and funded science analysis - we seek community input on issues ranging from data access to mechanisms to interact with process oriented science projects.
