Zooplankton Functional Role: From Quantifying Functional Traits at the Individual Level to Large Scale Estimates
Zooplankton Functional Role: From Quantifying Functional Traits at the Individual Level to Large Scale Estimates
Session ID#: 253204
Session Description:
Mesozooplankton play a crucial role in the functioning of pelagic ecosystems and global biogeochemical cycles. It is very diverse from a taxonomic and phylogenetic point of view (e.g., giant protists, copepod, krill, small jellyfish, fish larvae), but also functionally (e.g., small vs. large organisms, herbivores who are filtering-courant feeders vs. carnivores who are ambush feeders, vertical migrations, lipid reserve production, etc.). Yet, the link between zooplankton diversity and ecosystem functioning remains poorly understood. One way to decipher this link is by using a functional trait-based approach, in particular by taking advantage of recent developments in high-throughput sequencing and imaging of zooplankton. This session gathers observationalists, experimentalists, theoreticians, and modellers working on marine and freshwater zooplankton functional traits. Studies from various biogeographical provinces are welcome. We both encourage submissions using original datasets or exploiting already available ones using numerical ecology or machine learning. Studies can propose new tools to study zooplankton functional traits or to describe the functional trait biogeography and the drivers of zooplankton functional diversity. Studies aiming to improve ecosystem models, to develop new trait-based models, or to study phytoplankton traits and size-spectra in the context of food web interactions with zooplankton are welcome.
