Imaging and Image Analysis Needs in Ocean Science

Session ID#: 253450

Session Description:
Consumer cameras and underwater housings are more accessible now than ever. Yet these devices—and the workflows around processing their imagery—often fall short of scientific demands. In this session, we invite marine scientists to give a different kind of presentation, one that centers not on polished success, but on failure: Where is imaging failing you? Are you unable to access the technology you need—cameras, housings, computers, software? Are you working with borrowed or outdated equipment that limits the quality of your data? Are you based in a resource-limited region that lacks technical support, training, or parts? Are you trying to extract meaning from imagery taken under poor lighting or visibility? Are you struggling to standardize data collected with different cameras, times/locations? Are you using color charts but unsure how to incorporate them in post-processing? Are you overwhelmed by the volume of imagery you’ve collected or the manual work needed to segment, track, or identify features?

The goal of this session is to systematically map the landscape of challenges in marine imaging and organize them into a resource for technical researchers—across optics, computer vision, and machine learning—as well as for funders and institutions who can help close the infrastructure and access gap.
