Western Boundary Current and Topographic Interactions: Exploring the Interfaces between Physical, Biological, and Geological processes and Ocean Acoustics
Session ID#: 253653
Session Description:
This session invites contributions that explore Western boundary current systems from an interdisciplinary lens, bridging physical oceanography, biological oceanography, marine geology, and ocean acoustics. Western boundary currents play a critical role in regulating climate, supporting marine biodiversity, and shaping oceanographic processes across their respective gyres. Interaction of Western boundary currents with topographic features such as seamounts and the continental slope results in enhanced turbulence and mixing, eddy formation, internal waves, as well as deflection and meandering of the current’s trajectory. Further, seamounts are biological hotspots serving as spawning and feeding grounds for many species of fish and acting as migratory waypoints for whales and other animals. Additionally, Western boundary current dynamics combined with abrupt topography can alter ocean sound fields resulting in changes in soundscapes and opportunities and challenges for acoustic remote sensing, navigation, and communication. This session welcomes relevant papers on the dynamics of strong jet currents, current/topography interactions, and associated processes. Relevant study areas would include dynamics from mesoscales to mixing scales, and acoustics, including passive and active sensing of biological, geological, or physical phenomena, and tracking of marine organisms.
