Observations and modeling of physical processes at and near the air-sea interface
Observations and modeling of physical processes at and near the air-sea interface
Session ID#: 254084
Session Description:
Processes at and on either side of the air-sea interface govern momentum, heat, and mass exchanges which play an integral role in the Earth system, influencing weather and climate on a local to global scales. They span many spatio-temporal scales which prove challenging to bridge observationally and numerically. In this 6th iteration of the air-sea physical process session at OSM we invite contributions that expand our understanding, showcase novel approaches, and challenge the status quo to advance the field from observational, modeling, theoretical, and laboratory perspectives.
We strongly encourage contributions elucidating poorly understood geophysical settings :
- strongly forced conditions (wave breaking, sea spray, and bubbles)
- complex sea states, wave-mean flow interactions
- low wind regimes
- depth-limited domains
Some questions (non-exhaustive list) we would like to see addressed are:
- What is needed to advance the field and how can returns from cross-disciplinary perspectives be maximized?
- What is gained from high resolution coupled simulations ? How should coupling frameworks and parameterizations be adapted ?
- What are adequate observing strategies ? (novel sampling strategies and technologies for in situ and remote sensing)
Through discussions, we aim to strengthen the community's efforts to study the air-sea interface and adjacent boundary layers in a comprehensive way.
