Plastic & Plastic-Associated Contaminants in the Water Column

Session Description:
From below the surface to the seafloor, the ocean water column is rapidly accumulating plastics in different sizes and their associated contaminants. It is also home to a diverse and still poorly understood array of life that is critical to the functioning of the biological carbon cycle. Systematic and comprehensive study of this water column food web and its exposure to contaminants is challenging for myriad technological and practical reasons. This session welcomes submissions that address the challenges of measurement and analysis of water column plastics (from macro to micro and nano size particles) and their associated byproducts and contaminants, and food web exposure below the surface and above the seafloor. We also welcome contributions that assess impacts of plastics and associated contaminants on water column food webs, including on their roles in carbon, nutrient, and oxygen cycling. We welcome a variety of approaches including observation, environmentally-relevant experimental work, and modelling.
