The role of fine scales on global ocean dynamics in the SWOT era
The role of fine scales on global ocean dynamics in the SWOT era
Session ID#: 255031
Session Description:
Oceanic finescale processes (1-100 km, days to weeks) are critical to ocean dynamics, driving the horizontal and vertical redistribution of heat, biogeochemical reactions, and responses of organisms, while contributing to the energy cascade and the ocean circulation. A comprehensive understanding of fine-scale variability and its role in global ocean dynamics remains a key objective, yet historically, due to observational limitations, a large part of the knowledge of fine scales comes either from models or from regional in situ experiments focused on the largest and most energetic systems, like boundary currents or upwelling regions. These observation constraints however are being removed by recent advancements in technology, like autonomous platforms and, notably, the 2023 launch of the groundbreaking wide-swath, high resolution altimetry mission SWOT.
This session will build on over 20 multidisciplinary, fine scale-focused campaigns conducted in 2023 during SWOTâs initial 1-day repeat orbit (https://www.swot-adac.org), but encourages contributions from broader communities of modelers, biogeochemists, and ecologists studying fine scale ocean processes. The aim will be to collaboratively sketch the first observation-based global picture of the fine scales dynamics, spanning physics to chemistry to biology. Additionally, we will seek to identify key knowledge gaps for future research.
