Mapping, Monitoring, and Modelling Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Fluxes in Coastal habitats to Advance Blue Carbon Science
Session ID#: 255108
Session Description:
Coastal Blue Carbon Ecosystems (BCEs), including seagrasses, mangroves, and saltmarshes, play a crucial role in the global carbon and nitrogen cycles. These ecosystems act as significant carbon sinks, exchanging greenhouse gases (GHGs) with the atmosphere and storing substantial amounts of organic carbon in their soils, sediments, and biomass. Despite growing policy interest in wetlands for climate mitigation, their contribution to climate regulation remains uncertain due to gaps in the magnitude and variability of GHG fluxes and spatial extent.
This session highlights research advancing the understanding and monitoring of BCEs through remote sensing and ground-based flux observations. We invite studies focusing on GHG flux measurements (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) using chambers, eddy covariance, emerging sensor technologies, and modeling approaches, with emphasis on spatial variability, lateral fluxes, and responses to land-use change, sea-level rise, and other human impacts.
In parallel, we welcome contributions that leverage satellite and drone imagery, automated classification techniques, spectral analysis, and geospatial modelling to map BCE distribution, condition, and temporal dynamics.
By fostering dialogue between remote sensing experts, biogeochemists, and modelers, this session aims to support the development of robust regional and global GHG budgets and advance the role of BCEs in climate mitigation policy and carbon accounting frameworks.
