Internal and Surface Gravity Waves: Evolution, Interactions, Regime Transitions, and Energy Cascades

Session ID#: 255117

Session Description:
Waves with gravity as a primary restoring force are a key feature in geophysical fluid dynamics and ubiquitous in the ocean. They include internal waves in the ocean interior and surface waves at the air-sea interface. Gravity waves are primarily generated by winds and astronomical forcing, and travel long distances undergoing nonlinear interactions with other waves, vortices, and topography, making the diagnosis and quantification of these processes challenging. Although complex, the fundamental understanding of the lifecycle of gravity waves is crucial to in turn facilitate our understanding of the ocean dynamics and to parameterise their effects in coarser models. This session focuses on the fundamental description of gravity waves from theoretical frameworks, with an emphasis on process understanding from novel analytical and numerical approaches. Topics include, but are not limited to: interactions of waves with waves, vortices, topography, wind, and turbulence; effects of waves on measurements; nonlinear wave generation mechanisms; implications of steep topography, high latitudes, and horizontal/vertical boundaries. We welcome contributions on gravity waves in stratified oceanic and non-oceanic flows from theoretical aspects, idealized and direct numerical simulations, data-based methods, as well as laboratory experiments, in-situ and satellite measurements. We encourage participation from early career researchers.
