Arctic Maritime Safety, Climate Impacts, and Human–Environment Interactions
Arctic Maritime Safety, Climate Impacts, and Human–Environment Interactions
Session ID#: 255348
Session Description:
As Arctic sea ice rapidly retreats and ocean conditions shift, maritime activity in the region is increasing causing complex environmental, operational, and societal challenges. This interdisciplinary session explores the impacts of Arctic climate change on oceanic parameters, navigational safety, and human interactions. Topics include the effects of climate change on sea ice and navigation, risk management for cruise operations, safety implications of automation, and community perspectives on Arctic shipping. Integrating physical oceanography, maritime engineering, history, and policy, this session aims to foster dialogue among researchers working across scientific, geographic, and disciplinary boundaries.
By drawing together diverse expertise, from climate modellers and historians to sociotechnical researchers and risk assessors, we seek to better understand the changing Arctic and to inform sustainable and safe maritime futures. This session invites contributions addressing climate-ocean interactions, navigation hazards, infrastructure resilience, operational risk, Indigenous perspectives, and governance. We particularly encourage participation from early career researchers and those working in cross-disciplinary or community-engaged contexts.
