Ecological Insights and Technological Advances in Coral Reef Monitoring, Diagnostics and Restoration
Session ID#: 255810
Session Description:
Coral reefs, hubs of ocean biodiversity, are in crisis. Interdisciplinary and innovative science is needed to better understand how reef ecosystems function, necessitating new integrated datasets over multiple sensing modalities and large spatiotemporal scales. The goal of this session is to explore and examine insights provided by current and new sensing of, and solutions for, coral reefs. We seek presentations that examine reef ecology, health, modeling, and observations that may include scales from satellites to microbes, reef physics and chemistry. We encourage talks that address solutions to support science-based resilience and restoration of reefs and their adjacent communities. This could include addressing early detection and diagnostics of coral reef changes to better understand the mechanisms and signatures of change. Technological advances including robotics, machine learning, acoustics, imaging, hydrodynamic modeling, microbial, eDNA and chemical sensors may be able to help us advance reef science and capture information that can augment traditional observations. Through this session we seek to bring together a broad spectrum of scientists, engineers and managers to discuss current advances in our understanding of coral reefs, and the current and emerging technologies that allow for an improved ability to assess and restore coral reef health and function.
