A Sea of Learning: Sharing Stories of Ocean Engagement

Session Description:
The mission of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) calls for ‘transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean’. Specifically, Challenge 9 aims for capacity development and equitable access to skills, knowledge, technology and participation for all, and Challenge 10 aims to restore humanity’s relationship with the ocean. Addressing these challenges starts with current scientific ocean knowledge being made accessible to diverse audiences of learners, both coastal and inland. Formal and informal educators, scientists, professionals, and ocean-lovers alike can all play a role in creating engaging ocean learning opportunities. Honouring multiple ways of knowing, including Indigenous knowledge systems, local/experiential knowledge, natural/social sciences, and the arts, also plays an important role in addressing Challenges 9 and 10. Field trips, guest presentations, data driven activities, and networking events are just a few examples of ocean engagement opportunities. 

This session welcomes contributions aimed to advance ocean education and literacy through the delivery of innovative and progressive programs and communications for learners of all ages. We encourage submissions that discuss successes and challenges with regards to ocean education, which may include discussion of networking organizations, programs, case studies, campaigns, and collaborative projects.
