Optimizing Fisheries and Aquaculture Through Marine Spatial Planning for Sustainable Ocean Resource Management
Optimizing Fisheries and Aquaculture Through Marine Spatial Planning for Sustainable Ocean Resource Management
Session ID#: 256755
Session Description:
This session will explore the application of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to optimize fisheries and aquaculture for sustainable ocean resource management. MSP is a powerful tool that integrates scientific data, ecosystem-based management, and stakeholder input to design spatially optimized marine zones. These zones aim to balance the needs of different sectors—such as fisheries, aquaculture, conservation, and tourism—while protecting marine biodiversity and ensuring ecosystem health. The session will focus on practical strategies for identifying optimal fishing zones, selecting sustainable aquaculture sites, and reducing ecological conflicts in busy marine spaces. Through case studies and data-driven approaches, we will highlight how MSP contributes to the resilience of marine ecosystems, supports the livelihoods of coastal communities, and promotes the long-term sustainability of ocean resources. This session is aimed at researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals seeking innovative solutions to marine resource management challenges.
